Greetings,

I think I am about to puchase a 1993 S 600. Very clean car with only 55 k miles. I have read a lot of posts on this and the "other" benz board which generally seem to disfavor the 600 models primarily due to the cost of annual mechanical maintence...

I currently have a CL600 (2001) which I do not put a lot of miles on or have I had much mechanical difficultly with... I realize with older cars seals, exhausts, gizmos and gadgets go bad, but I am willing to accept that (I think)...

In order to protect my downside, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a warranty company who might cover this vehicle? I got a quick quote from Warranty Direct (minimal research done on the company (as of now) and although their cost of coverage seemed very low, their dollar caps on what was covered was also low. Did not feel that this warranty was worth prosuing (at least not until I exhaust all other options)...

The car is being inspected today by a mercedes dealership, and the report will probably have the biggest impact on my decision (the seller is a private indivdual, who has owned the car for most of it's life. Has meticulous records and his reason for selling is that he is consolidating two households (one on each coast, and needs to depart with some of his toys)...

Appreciate any comments anyone wishes to share...

Age is the main thing in these cars. Also design. This was the first generation of V12 that MB had done for a while so it had 'issues' your cl600 will be much better in terms of reliability for that simple reason it is newer. Also is the fact that the v12 uses two of just about everything because of its massive size. If you have the cash to keep it going and a backup car then go for it.

I'm surprised anyone will offer a warranty on a 13 year old car.

I mean, it's 13 years old. There can't possibly be money to be made there. I'd just self insure. Put away the money that you were thinking about paying for a warranty each month and keep it for repairs. You'll need it. Plan on $2-3000 up front for basic reconditioning no matter what the pre-purchase inspection says.
