I just acquired a 1993 600SEL with 100,000 miles. The interior appears to be in good shape, but for a worn driver seat cover ($1500) and a rear door that will not open from either the inside or outside (Cost TBD).

My local Mercedes dealer told me that the 600SEL/S600 is INSANELY expensive to maintain once it hits 100k miles. $7000 for new transmission??? The car has been regularly maintained to this point.

What can I expect in terms of annual maintenance costs from this point forward? What are the common, expensive problem areas?

Mercedes car dealers are usually very expensive..sometimes up to 4 times more expensive ...

Mercedes car dealers are usually very expensive..sometimes up to 4 times more expensive then other places.

Of course the motor and transmission are expensive to fix no matter what... but unless the car was maintained poorly then u dont have to worry about that. And even in cases of motors and trans..sometimes they are fixable...but the dealer would want you to buy a whole new one.

So get to know a mechanic specialist..or a good mechanic..and buy your parts online or a cheap place.

I had an s420 that i sold to my friend, the dealer wanted 500$ to change his brakes....even though the pads are like 40 bucks and discs are like 70 bucks online at www.benzbin.com << they have tech and tip information there as well that might answer ur questions

Even with regular service, things wear out. The old 300 SEL 6.3 is a perfect example of how maintenace intensive the 600 is. Mass flow air sensors, two, are $2,000 each. Dual everything! Most of the problems have centered around the many elctronic parts wearing out due to heat.
