hello all: i just bought a '92 300TE. it, ah, needs some work. a friend of mine does body work so he's talking care of the exterior cosmetic stuff for me and i need to look for parts, and i have a s***load of questions. first thing on the list is the cracked front bumper valance. thank you in advance for any help, and here comes the barrage:

1. here's a pic of the damage (from a snowbank):

2. i was told (by a bodyshop) that the whole front bumper cover assembly had to be replaced. is this correct?

3. so i can check junkyards, which other models share this same part?

4. i was told (also by the bodyshop) that the new part was $480, but here it is on this website for about $150:

is this a cheap knock-off or something? should i avoid that?

Just about every 124 from '1990 on uses that same front bumper cover...except for the 500E. You should be able to locate one in just about any wrecking yard that deals with Euro cars.

btw: I was unable to view the pics via the link you provided.

It's telling me I need to register for an account. You probably need to open up the viewing rights to include the public

Yes, it is a cheap knockoff. I also bought a cheapy for my 300TE, primed and painted it with spray can factory color paint, and installed it with just slight modification.:)

As mentioned above, go to a junkyard and remove one from any W124.
Do not mess with cheap aftermarket parts as they are not worth the hassle.
You might even find a bumper with nice and matching paint. Most likely you will.

i think i found one. you wouldn't happen to know what tools i would need to remove it, or another thread that discusses this?

thanks.

From memory, I believe it's held on via four 13mm and three 10mm nuts. They're very easy to remove. Once the nuts are removed, it should pull straight forward

[edit] I think there may be one more 10mm nut, and don't forget to use a phillips to remove the outside temp sensor behind the front license plate.

It better be pristine and in the exact color you need for that price.
