I have done some work on my vehicle, and I am now trying to improve my gas mileage. I have recently replaced: Plugs, wires, rotor, cap, rebuilt wiring harness, air filter, valve cover gasket.

The engine has 240k on the clock. My gas mileage is still just under 20mpg. The engine is not burning oil.

Can anyone tell me what I should be looking at to improve the gas mileage?

That may be about as good as it gets. 300SEs are gas hogs, not much better than a V8. Mileage went up 20 percent in 1994 S320 with the HFM engine management system and a taller rear axle ratio. You could swap rear axles but I doubt it would ever pay off, especially on a late in life car.

300SE Gas Mileage

Have a 92 and 93 300SE and each gets about 19.2 mpg around town and I can squeak out 21-22 on the interstate with cruise, so you're doing OK. They're great cars to drive and relatively easy to maintain; parts cost is above average, but what Benz parts aren't?

Like others have said. They do use a lot more gas. Our older 1990 300SEL used less gas than our newer 1992 300SE with a shorter wheel base too. WTH?
