An opportunity has arisen to purchase a 91 350SD for about 9000 dollars US. Car has about 120k miles.

I am recalling discussion of Major Problems with the big Mercedes turbodiesels from about this era... or am I mistaken.

Any opinions would be welcome. I am not particularly handy but know some MB people who I would trust to work on it as things arise... but the car is at some distance and I cannot check it out myself.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

you are not mistaken, something about thin cylinder walls (as it was bored out to larger displacement)...do a bit of search and you will find that most failed by the time they hit 100000kms and were replaced under warranty ....so if the car you are looking it had engine replaced/rebuild you could be potentialy ok but still not worth the risk i woudl say.

Hi Jimsaco I found the link below where some people were discussing the engine in question. From what I have heard and seen, the 300sdl,350sdl egines had many head gasket issues but not all of them. I have a 1986 300sdl with over 300k on it and it runs awesome I don't know if it has been repaired probably has. I'd imagine by now the ones that had issues have been repaired or didn't need it. My favorite engine is the cast iron 5cylinder diesel engine it's slower but amazingly durable.

What market are you in? Are you talking about a US spec 1991 350SD? That would be a W126 sedan, not W140.
