Today starting from a stop , heard a loud clunk and then car would not drive forward. Reverse still works. All forward gears inop. Any ideas about severity of tranny problem? Is it worth fixing. AC inop, clunk when turning steering wheel to the left, other than that car is really clean.

Check the hardyplate on the propellershaft.
It can alsow be the discs in the gearbox if it's automatic. Bushings and balljoint's in the steering is parts that need to be changed after a while. If the car is good this wil be worth fixing.

if the transmission is crunched, figure $1800 for a rebuild from Sun Valley or equivalent (after core refund), and if you can't change it yourself, figure around $1000-1200 for a shop to remove and reinstall. so basically about $3000. is your car worth that to you? Sun Valley will rebuild it better than new, so you'll get at LEAST another 200K out of it..

The hardy is the on the front and rear of the propellershaft. A rubberish disc with 2x 3 holes. Easy to change.
The disc's with brakepads/clutches are inside of the gearbox. This is a lot of work, and a shop is best for most people.

Hardy plate. Hardy washer. Guibo. Driveshaft coupling. Flex disc. Lot's of different names.

It's the rubber donut shaped thing on either end of your driveshaft.

flex disk is the most common name on Mercedes. I've heard Guibo before, never heard of Hardy Plate.

here's a very cracked one that miraculously didn't fail yet.

that was from my wife's E320 wagon, at about 240k miles. If these fail, its pretty catastrophic, the drive shaft ends get all beaten up, and can often take out other stuff with them. VERY unlikely to let your car go backwards but not fowards, more likely to make all kinda horrible speed dependent noise

Thank you for the info. I just ended up selling it for 500.
