Check to see if the transmission shifts fine, and how much blow by there is. Before you start the car, make sure the engine is not hot and not run recently, as they may be trying to hide a cold start issue. Also, check the fluids and see if it is burning anything. These diesels are bullet proof, and can withstand almost anyting. If all is good, you have one good car on your hands.

$700 is a good deal, as long as it runs well and the body is in good shape.

If ambient temperature is above 5C, disconnect the glow plug relay when attempting a cold start. With good compression, it should start in less than 20 seconds.

Look at engine mounts, shaking at idle.
Rev to 5000 rpm in neutral, then rapidly lift accelerator, engine should promptly drop to idle (injection pump adjustment).

Check problematic accessories: wiper, heat, air conditioning, antenna, windows, mirror, lock vacuum motor, cruise control, roof hatch, clock, fuel guage, smooth ignition key operation, locked out radio, separate master/valet keys, glovebox lock.

Pop the hood and look at the injection pump (driver's side of the engine). Inspect the nut were the fuel lines exit and go to the injectors...are they wet? If so, the delivery valve seals will need to be replaced. Also, look for fuel leaks from the IP, and down by the fuel heater. If there are leaks, chances are the LH engine mount has been soaked in diesel for a while, rubber has broken down, and it will need to be replaced.

Harsh shifting can be caused by vacuum problems...be on the lookout for that.

Car started with boost, battery dead. He said car has been sitting for a month. Shifting gears was very hard. Car did run. Some rust on fenders. Heater blower was not working. I offered $400.
What could cause the hard shifting??
Thanks again.

go for it. Just be prepared for a money pit if it needs work and you are not a DIYer.

It all depends upon where it is located. If in USA, then it appears to be a Euro model, because 87 was the last year for North American diesels. Being a Euro model can have "rare" advantages -- Manual climate control system, manual windows, no MB-Tex, no EGR.

And yes, any W201 is economically inefficient to maintain, unless everything is DIY.

Harsh shifting could be low fluid or worn out k1 springs in the transmission.

If you do all the work yourself, it can be a cheap and economical car. If you take it places to get worked on, you are preparing to spend a ton of money.

$400 is a pretty good deal, especially since it runs

I thought you said $700 originally?
$1200 seems like a little much to me, as you will most likely have that much in parts also.

He changed his price to $1200 as is.
i also noticed no hood latch, no trunk lock.
the dash is cracked, some accessories buttons pushed in.
lots of leaks in the engine compartment.
i thin i will stick to offering him 200-400 max.

dollar parity?

I bought an 85 190d 2.2 Non turbo diesel with manual transmission - the D5 as I've heard it called. I paid 500 pucks, because the PO couldnt fix the headlight wire that had shorted. after i fixed it all the lights and wipers came back... i still had to fix the window regulators all around, replaced the front control arms and fuel filters, and all fluids, replaced stuck power seats with manuals that i got salvage, and am going to replace the dash from one i pulled from salvage as well. also have to fix the drivers side door lock. all told I paid 500 cash and about 1500 more to get it going better on the road...the thing ran fine, but the suspension still needs work.

unless you dont need a project that you can do gradually, be prpared to throw money at it. But I still feel like i got a pretty good car than i can convert to bio-d for 2000 total or so. The 4cylinder diesel sings at 80 mph, and I average about 38 mpg. The manny tranny is awesome and fun to drive.

also, the ac doesnt work, but i think it needs r12 and the heater control valve, as it's always warm - so not bad in the winter.

I know this car as the german Cockroach that refuses to die. The engine feels bulletproof, even at 290,000 miles.

I would say that for 500 i
