1987 190E 2.6 valve train noise

the valve train has a light tappet noise from one or two cam followers. Before I open it up, is it common for follower or cam wear on these engines? car has 174K mi. thanks.

It is very common to have follower or even cam wear. But even more common is a broken spring IN the lifter. They are located at the end of each rocker. Remove valve cover , put cylinder 1 at tdc, now move the rockers for cyl. 1 up and down. there should be no play. If there is see where its coming from. Next, turn crank till #5 is tdc. Going through the firing order, check for play in the rest of the rockers. 1 5 3 6 2 4
