Hi,
I have just purchased a 1986 W124 230E, originally an English car. I can see that it had a Blaupunkt Stereo because the four speakers are all Blaupunkt. I was wondering if anyone knows what would have been the original model Blaupunkt radio in this car?
Thanks,
Ronan

Blaupunkt was not the original radio supplier.

AFAIK, Becker had the exclusive on the early generation radios.

I prefer Blaupunkt over those Beckers any day of the year.

rm05so if you need to know i have all information that came with my car. Along with original Blaupunkt radio manual . And i can say that over in the uk the Blaupunkt radio cassette players were fitted . May be it was the owners choice if he or she wanted a --cd or tape deck ..This may be the dealers choice .. But in the workshop manual all information is for Becker and phone set up .The alarm system it all in with the Becker radios .

Thanks a million for that Trevor. I would just love to know the model of blaupunkt radio that came with this model as mine has none, just the wires stripped out and I would like to get a radio that is as period correct as possible.

Interesting that Blaupunkt was fitted to at least some Euro cars. Lot better head unit than Becker. Blaupunkt older generation HU's are legendary. Nakamichi HU's were the best, but servicing their products was always problematic.

I believe US models /all/ came with factory stereos, which were Beckers. Euro models, the stereo was often a dealer installation item and could be different brands.

Notice you have a 300E. I am working on a 1991 300E 2.6 for my son. The radio volume switch is worn out. How/where can it be fixed? Just replaced the water pump, AC compressor and did a seal kit for the PS.
Thanks,
Fred
If you are handy and can deal with "exploding" assemblies when you take it apart, (I'm being over dramatic), then you probably can fix this. Each button on the Beckers fitted in series I and series II w124s have a return spring and metal actuator. The actuator touches a pad on the circuit board and this is how contact is made. The pads/actuators get small amounts of corrosion on them and they don't work or work poorly. The volume control is usually the first one to fail. You should be able to resolve this yourself.

I don't know enough about these units to recommend for or against swapping out the front panel from a working one into your radio. There probably are version levels or tying of assemblies to each other by code or serial number that we aren't aware of.

non of my benzes have factory stereos.... that said, if it has pushbutton volume, I'd carefully diassemble it, and see if you can't clean the button contacts with a bit of Caig DeOxit D100 and a soft clean pink pencil eraser. if it has a knob/potentiometer, spray the insides of the pot with DeOxit D5 and work the volume knob back and forth a whole bunch of times, blot up any excess lubricant with a clean cloth, reassemble and try it.

I use the DeOxit products a lot in old analog gear. One member here posted about using old 35mm film roll negatives; curl a portion around the HU volume shaft and spray in DeOxit.....work the shaft back and forth about 50 times...each sweep back and forth counted as ONE.

Otherwise, to get to button switches, you have to at least partially disassemble.

And don't forget about the "backup radio" a.k.a the engine soundtrack. No commercials, no news, no traffic info.
It's a lost art I'm afraid; listening to engine and drivetrain for unusual noises that would indicate an issue and/or just enjoying the mechanical symphony.
