I respect the vintage Mercs and my vintage Vette but .........if I were going to drop 135,000 on new vehicle it would be the new AMG GT not 30 yr old tech that needs constant repair if start using it!!
But damn what a car!

Am I missing something? Isn't a Hammer a Hammer because it's got a 6L AMG built engine? How can this car be called a Hammer when it's got a 5.6L engine? Didn't the 5.6L come in a bunch of cars? Maybe not E-Class cars but not an uncommon engine. Lots of interesting discussion on BAT...

yeh..I take BAT readers with a grain of salt...Many just seem to be competing for ass of the year contest. I did find the article I read as a teenager that left me drooling all over my car&driver pages...and it seems to support the spec of this car. That said, there are cosmetic exceptions in the engine compartment:

Mercedes-Benz AMG Hammer Archived Test ? Review ? Car and Driver

There is a pic of the motor buried in that link. When compared to the one for sale, there are some significant differences..most notable being the missing driver side intake snorkel. Now, these were also still early AMG days (pre-mfg-agreements) and every car may not have been identical month to month..so perhaps an early example? One other difference is the car from the C&D article has an obvious rear valance cut out for exhaust..this one is flat. Can't see the AMG rear badge either (left side) but could just be Craigslist photo quality.

Could also have had some engine work or worst case an engine fire... I do note the engine compartment looks dirtier than I expect for 23k miles and not well sorted in general. Could also be a sophisticated scam or someone who was the victim of a scam and now believes they are selling the real deal. No idea, but if it is a true 23k mile hammer..it's pretty iconic...IMO

All in all, would only consider this if I had all those afore mentioned $130k options (and several others) alredy in the stable. Just thought it was cool AMG fodder.

It's got the AMG developed quad cam heads on the m117 motor which is the important thing - extremely rare!

Yes, 135k is a huge amount for a 30 year old low mileage car if you are going to use it frequently, but as an investment that gets polished and used at the weekend, this is the sensible money over the AMG GT. I know I would prefer to own this in 10 years time over a 10 year old AMG GT!
