Hello all. My 1986 190E automatic transmission
has started to occasionally slip out of gear in 3rd, as if the clutch is slipping. It shifts back ok when I stop and cycle D-N-D. The local garage wants to replace the whole transmission for 2-3K$.
Could it be something less drastic?

Check all of the obvious things first, fluid level, vacuum lines, bowden cable, etc. Don't jump into a new tranny yet. Elminate all possible problems that are fixable.
Also, check the vacuum modulator.
