I had a small oil leak under my car so I brought it to a local mechanic - he told me I have upper and lower oil pan leaks but he quoted me a very high price to repair.
I have a licensed shop that will do the work for me at a greatly reduced labor price as a favor if I supply the parts - my question is:

All I can find are gaskets for upper oil pans. Would this be all I need to fix the upper oil pan leak? or do I need to actually look for an upper oil pan? I cant find one anywhere on line.
Please excuse the ignorance of my question - I love these cars but have NO mechanical knowledge at all.

i think there is a lot of labor involved; i know on a SD you actually have to lift the engine out to get the upper pan off; most people don't bother with it...the lower oil pan gasket is very easy though

I had a friend who had this problem with his just bought vw passat. He ended up shelling out $1200 I'm pretty sure it was. I would imagine that it's just the gasket, but you would have to ask the shop if the pan itself is damaged.

thanks guys - I too am wondering if it is just the gasket - the previous owner was pretty good about repairs - he rebuilt the transmission at 115,000 and redid the entire fuel and vacuum system. i just replaced the radiator at 135,000 -- currently at 136,000; so the MINOR engine leaks and tranny leak is all that are left.
I am only putting 2,500 miles a year on the car. The paint is awesome and original and the body is perfect. Even if I put $3,000 or $4,000 into the car a year for a few years I know I got a steal.
