Should i junk my 380 SL and get a 450 or 560? Ive been hearing that its not one of the best engines Mercedes made, I understand they were shooting for fuel economy at that stage in production, I've had it for about 2 & 1/2 years only broblem is it keeps burning the rotor button (maybe time for new timing chain) and its not a powerful engine. What do you guys think? Thanks...

I love my 380 and specifically was hoping to find one. It works just great for me. I'm not a speed demon, but still I find it gives me plenty of pick up. Every time the price of gas goes up, there's another reason I'm glad I've got a 380, which, incidentally, I use as a daily driver.

Unless you need big numbers for some reason or feel like you have to have the fastest, why would you junk a 380? Unless maybe it had a lot of problems anyway.

Personally, sometimes I wonder if some people go for bigger engines to overcompensate -- not that this would describe anyone on this forum, of course!

I drive my '82 380 SL for the looks. It's a bit of slug, but if I want to autocross or pick drag races with someone, then I'd pick a completely different car. My 325i isn't the fastest car on the road by a long shot, but it's still fun to toss around and serves me well. If the 380 makes you happy, is reliable and still gets nice comments from passers-by, then keep it.

My problem is I had an S 420 and that thing was a rocket. But i do know these cars are like night and day, I'm just spoiled to the power I had...

Well I have a used 560SL engine trans, computer, wire harness, ignition module and fuel pump cluster. Basically its the complete setup anyone needs to put a 560SL engine into any other car. Engine has 200K burns oil but runs exceptionally well. Oil consumption may be caused by broken cam oilers. Make offer.
