What is the point of losing the charcoal canister? They don't really lower performance, all they do is prevent gas fumes into the atmosphere.

I'm in the same boat and I'm looking to remove mine from my 500SLC. The reason why? It's not original and it clutters up an already crowded engine bay.

All you have to do is pull and cap the vacuum line from charcoal canister. Then you just put a filter and vent to atm. for the gas tank vapor line. You just vent to atmosphere.

I probably will need to do the same delete on the '89 BMW 535i. All the fuel lines are dangerously rusty and it's a Chinese puzzle (politically incorrect, I know) to get them in/out. I actually found a junkyard car that had all 3 lines in great shape and spent a day getting them out in one piece. The vent line really got mangled and twisted whereas the in/out lines are in good shape. That's gonna be my X-mas vacation project. The 380SL will stay as is. I need to get this BMW to be reliable to back up SWMBO's 380SL . If it ever fails, she's walkin'. I really need to fix the cam on the SL, but she has no backup.

Also noticed a frequency valve but that is another can of worms.

Yep, installing a frequency valve and o2 sensor
Is part of converting a grey market car to US spec.
Catalytic converter too.

Along with bracing in the doors for side impact.

What a horrible spot for the charcoal canister, mine is hidden in the drivers side fender. Do you have an air pump? Just undo the canister and remove it and plug the vacuum line to the air intake. Then I'd direct the fuel vapors to somewhere outside of the engine bay and use a breather filter to prevent gunk from getting in the vent line.

Hello everyone,

I have imported a Federalized 280SL from 1985 back to Europe and would like to know what I need to do to safely remove and cancel the charcoal filter.

Thank you
Remove the charcoal canister assembly.

Follow the vacuum lines back to where they are connected.......one should go back to the tank and one to passive vacuum on top of the intake....probably to the breather hose on the side of the cam box.

Disconnect the one from the tank and leave it be. Disconnect the one on the engine and plug it.

Crack open a beer.

You may find they were already installed.

Side intrusion bars were first installed on Mercedes for the Australian market, to meet design rules in the late 70's. But Mercedes started putting them on all car after a while. Unfortunately because it was superseding the earlier door, rather than a 'new' part us such, the EPC doesn't provide a VIN for when the change took place, but my 500SLC that has it's original doors, has side intrusion bars factory fitted, and was never delivered to a market that required them.

Mine were an add on...1983.
