G'day everybody!
I recently purchased a 1984 300gd as a vehicle to take to the ski-fields and camping/hunting. Unfortunately, nothing is ever close by in Australia, and these journeys inevitably involve a period of several hours on freeways.
My G wasn't equiped with a functioning tachometer, so i was wondering if someone could tell me what sort of engine speeds I would be sitting on at 90/100 km/hr. What sort of fuel consumption could one expect at these speeds (it's mated to a four speed auto transmission), and would these driving at these speeds daily be harmful to an old diesel?

Hello down there,

I think you will be spinning around 3000 to 3500 rpm at those speeds with your transmission and diff ratios. No problem with the motor, it will like it and you should have no issues. I think you should see around 18 to 20 mpg (sorry don't know what that means in liters/Kms) depending on how heavy you are laden and your foot is. Adjust the valves at least once a year, keep the fuel clean and change the oil every 3000 miles and your truck will be happy. Grease the driveline at the oil change too. Congratulations on finding one of the best vehicles ever made.
