Can anyone tell me if the lifters in the 2.2 diesel engine need periodic adjusting? My engine sounds noiser than it use to, or is there any adjustment for the timing chain that I would need to check? Thanks

Try changing your oil. The lifters are hydraulic, but rely on oil flowing through tiny holes on the top of the lifters. If those get plugged, they don't work ;)

Changed oil including an addative but still having excess noise in lifter timing chain area of engine, I certain this is mechanical not injectors etc. Can someone direct me to a good pic breakdown of the 2.2 diesel engine as I think the timing chain or a lifter is bad. Will probably do this work myself, any advise apriciated, Thanks

Yes, the lifter can go bad and make a clatter noise. In certain circumstances, this can add drag to the camshaft, place additional stress on the timing chain, and lead to premature breakage of the timing chain.

This was the condition on my parts car.

No, I have not done any repairs to the parts car.

Working on valve lifters should not require work on the camshaft or timing chain. So, solving the immediate problem should not change your injection pump timing.

Did you or has anyone replaced the cam followers (lifters / tappets) in their 2.2 dsl.? I am very mechanical and I believe able to do this, however not being familiar with the engine I'm concerned about loosing the timing in the process. Advice welcome!

Attached there is section of original service manual covering engine timing.
I have replaced few worn valve lifters without disturbing the timing with just removing cylinder head cover and camshaft.
I secured the chain to gear with zip ties, used a flexible rope to pull it upwards while removing/refitting the camshaft and checking/replacing valve lifters.
Remember to undo the camshaft tightening bolts slowly and evenly, otherwise you might bend/damage the camshaft.
It is good idea to have new cylinder head cover gasket on hand.
Good luck!
