Idle up cable? Wrong timing? Too lean? Too rich? Engine compression? Donkey did this to me - wouldn't start in winter, due to low compression, but ran like clockwork once running.

The throttle linkage, if there's a lot of slop in it, will cause poor starting issues. I've had the thing come loose on me while on the road and for a moment I thought something might be wrong with the engine but it turned out to be a loose nut that connects the rod from the firewall to the linkage piece atop the valve cover. I tightened that thing up and it was good as new. Be sure to lube the joints when you adjust the linkage.

And, like others have already said, check the fuel delivery and glow plug systems first.
