Is the heater control valve on the '81 unique? I see repair kits for '82 and up. I am getting a slow bleed of hot air through the defrost vents with the HVAC system totally shut off.

If by unique you mean "awkward and horrendously expensive to fix", then yes - it's very unique. I have the same setup in my 78.

The heater control valve is called a servo, and it sits in the engine compartment, up near the firewall on the passenger side. Under the dash is a climate control amplifier. You should change both of them at the same time, but they do cost some money. The servo is around $500 delivered, and the amp is another $100 on top of that.
