I don't know anything about Benz's, but the other day I was driving by a beautiful red 1981 380 SLC that had a For Sale sign on it and thought it was awesome. It looks mint on the outside, has tan leather interior and 107,000 highway miles. According, to the owner the A/C works. I don't know if it has a single or double timing chain. The owner wants $6K, but is willing to negotiate. <br> <br> Any advice on buying this model and/or ideas on what I should pay for it. I would appreciate advice on pricing for both single and double timing chain. <br> <br> Thanks, Carlos

Hi Carlos,<br> <br> The SLC is one of the most beautiful cars MB ever made. The simplex chain were fitted in engines nos. 116.96 up to model year 1983 and must be replaced with the duplex (186 links) chain together with all sprokets in case of repair. The left-hand cylinder head must be removed for this purpose. (MB no longer supply simplex chain for this vehicle since 1984). Cost of replacement around $2000-$3000. At 107k miles is long due for replacement together with guides and oil pump chain. It can be checked if it has duplex chain via the oil cap on the right-hand side rocker cover with the aid of a dentist's mirror and a torch. If it has simplex chain, offer $4k and replace it stright away.
