I just acquired a 1980 560sel...I think.

It is baged as such and also with the AMG emblem. This car used to be my dad's and I remember him telling me when I was a kid that it was the imported euro version and that it was badged wrong and never fixed when some changes where done to it. It does have the amg body kit and some other small upgrades so that seems like it could be correct. Most of the writing under hood and stickers are in German so that also seems to check out. I think he mentioned it was a 500se but not sure. That would match the 1980s euro years of production and explain the cloth seats and no airbags. But is it realy a 500se? I cant seem to find a working decoder for 14 digit mercedes vins (I tried the Russian site too). Does any one know what the fourth through sixth digit mean, I cant find any info of it online.

The vin is:
B126 036 12006723

Any help on figuring out this family gem would be greatly appreciated! I'd like to get back as close to original as possible.

OK..

Welcome to BenzWorld!

Firstly, the 560 was introduced in 1986, a Gen2 car.

To correctly research, one needs the full 17 digits of the VIN.

post a pic or two, find the full VIN, that would help us, also open the hood and a pic of the engine bay will help. Is is a manual or auto ?

Hey..thank you all for the reponse.

There actually isn't a full 17 digit vin. This is the pre 1983 14 digit style vins. It's an automatic v8 (not sure size).

I attached some pictures of engine and body if it helps. And let me just put it out there that this was the 80's in Miami.... that why the color scheme. Lol

Nice car. It is a 500SE, meaning it is a short wheel base. Relatively rare.

But please lose those wheels!!!

From 1990 to 1995, Mercedes-Benz sold a high-performance version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E (W124.036 )
W126 -platform
036 500e
1 -LHdrive
2 - auto
00- 1990
the rest are sequence production numbers
She is a rare car , someone rebadged it , doubt it is an AMG , but is considered high performance
Would not have had the gold trim or those wheels, the lights are USA, so not sure it is a gray market unless the dash is in german and in metric

Awsome...thank you. Yeah, I want to get it back to it's original form. First the gold has to go and then the wheels. Do you know if the Bundt style wheels are the ones it would have came with, or any suggestions for time appropriate wheels?.

Great to hear the wheels and gold accents will go away. You may also want to source s 500SE trunk badge while you're at it.

Yes stock period correct wheels would have been the Bundts, however with the skirt package on the car you will need some wider wheels and tires. Look for Centras, BBS Mahle, or any other period correct aftermarket wheel (I have a preference for spoked wheels like the BBS RA/RM/RS). I'd suggest 8" or wider.

The VIN of the car in question starts with W126.036, not a W124.036.

these would be the original style, nothing better in my opinion

The wheels pictured were not available on the Gen1 W126, so they would be considered a modification. Besides, 6" wide OEM wheels (or 6.5 as equipped on the hi HP SEC) would not look the best with the body kit in the OPs pictures

Dag Jimmy! Please go easy on the mis-information.

All 500se are standard / Euro. There are no US market 500se. So in the US, all 500se w126 are gray market.

The body kit is actually decent. Get rid of the 80s gold.. get rid of the 2000s wheels. Get some 17 inch aero 1 amg. And it will be great

That 500SE is a rare bird. The gold is hideous and screams "Drug Dealer's ride" so it will not be missed. :) With proper wheels, no more gold and some interior cleaning that will be a hell of a terrific car. The 500SE's are super hard to find. I would kill for one! Ride with pride.

Stock wheels would be 14's (the wider 14's at 6.5) so do not be tempted to go for 17's. 15's are the perfect compromise, allowing you more tire choices. The ride will remain smooth, as originally intended. Naturally we all have different opinions, but I hope you don't mind reading mine. There are so so many 15 inch wheel options. BBS, AMG monoblocks, stock 560SEC Gullideckal (correct spelling?). I have never liked the Bundts. Yuck.

BTW I just noticed what appears to be an HID ballast. How is it set up with the DOT sealed beam headlights? Or is it for the fog lights?

AMG kit says 16 or 17” too me. I guess for 100% period correct, 16” would be the way to go.

Loose the rear ///AMG badge too, as it’s not period correct, and takes away from the AMG body kit which is period correct.

Gullideckel is the correct German spelling. I had these on my W140 and they are easy to clean.
