HELLO ALL!
I AM THE NEW OWNER OF A 1980 500 SLC. I HAVE BEEN
LOOKING ON THE NET FOR ANY INFO ON THIS MODEL.
SO FAR I HAVE FOUND THAT FEW WERE MADE SOME WHERE IN THE 12-1300 RANGE ALSO THAT THEY WERE FOR EUROPEAN DELIVERY.
MY CAR HAS ALUMINUM HOOD AND TRUNK, EURO BUMPERS AND HEAD LIGHTS. AND I AM NOT SURE IF THE 16" WHEELS ARE STOCK.
I WILL APPRECIATE ANY AND ALL INFO REGARDING THIS MODEL.
VIN # 107 026 12 00662
THANK YOU
ROEL

The new alu-V8 that was for the W126 S-class was first used in the 450SLC 5.0. This engine was some 46 kg lighter than the old V8, and together with the alu hood and trunk, the car was around 100kg lighter than the 450SLC. Later came the 500SLC, which looks exactly the same as the 450SLC 5.0, but has a 0.5mm smaller cylinder diameter making it some 50cc smaller. Other differences was that the 500SLC got a 4sp auto, whereas the 5.0 had the old 3-sp. The 500SLC also got the W126 steering wheel.

Stock was the 6,5 x 14 "Bundt cake" alu wheels, with 205/70-14 wheels. I also believe that the car had the (rather ugly) rubber spoiler on the trunk but it seems to be removed on your car. Total production 5.0 and 500SLC was approx 2700 cars.

Found some more info in one of my Mercedes books:450SLC 5.0: pilot built in September...

Found some more info in one of my Mercedes books:

450SLC 5.0: pilot built in September 1977, produced April 1978 – September 1981
500SLC: pilot built February 1980, produced March 1980 – July 1981

Production numbers:
1977: 9
1978: 524
1979: 937
1980: 816
1981: 483
Total: 2769

450SLC 5.0 was never available in the USA, and was distinguished visually from the other SLC models my its dark-colored lower body panels, and by a chin spoiler and the black rubber spoiler at the edge of the boot-lid (looks from you picture that both front and rear spoiler is missing on your car!). The spoilers reduced aerodynamic drag by a claimed 9%.

125 lbs was trimmed from the cars weight thanks to aluminum boot-lids and boot-lid panels and aluminum wheels (optional on other SLCs). A few cars ordered without the rear spoiler were however fitted with steel boot-lids. The new 5-liter engine saved another 95lbs in weight through its light-alloy castings. Not only the block, but also the heads, pistons, valve covers and sump were all cast from light alloy.

For the model year 1981, the new light alloy V8 was fitted in all V8 powered W107 (380SL, 380SLC, 500SL and 500SLC). The experience from the 450SLC 5.0 lead to some design changes for the new full-scale production of the alu V8. For example the 5 liter engine had a 0,5mm reduction of bore allowed for more “meat between the cylinders and permitted new water passages.

Whereas the 450SLC 5.0 had the 3-speed automatic gearbox from the 450SL/SLC, the only available transmission for the new V8 cars was a new lightweight version of the 4-speed automatic first seen in the 2.8-liter models. The 500SL/SLC kept the 2,72:1 axle ratio from the 450SLC 5.0. The alloy panels from the 450SLC 5.0 was also used.

JQ, Thank You for the reply and for all the info You have given.
You are right both the front and rear spoilers are
missing from My car. I would like to find the parts to make this car whole again.
The front fenders have rust in them at the point where the spoiler would attach. The front bumper has damage and right side rear quarter window is broken out.
the engine runs smooth with just a little smoke on acceleration. It sat for about 1 year so I hope the smoke will go after I put some drive time on it.
I got the car for a song ( $450.00 U.S ) so I think I can aford to put a little time and $ into it.
Do You know what other years and models will work for front end parts and glass?
Once again thank You for all the info.
Roel

450SLC5.0

Roel,

My 450SLC5.0 with hard front spoiler but retaining the original rear one. Have the original soft version for the front in my garage and could ship to you if you wish the original.
