Simple question. I have been working on my 1980 300TD for several months now, and repairing some significant damage to the rear hatch was one of the jobs. I don't recall ever trying to lock the rear hatch, but now I discover that the lock is locked and I only have one key for the whole car. Is there only one key that fits the whole car, or did I buy a car missing the second key?

I'm pretty sure these cars had 1 key that worked everything. At some point your car might have had the locks changed or a new ignition tumbler/lock was put in.

On my 240D I had to put in a new ignition tumbler/lock mechanism since the old one would get stuck. Right now I have 1 key for the ignition and 1 for everything else. Make sure you get keys made at the dealer, the steel ones. The brass keys will leave shavings inside the locks and will cause them to fail prematurely.
