Long time lurker first time poster. 94 R129 600sl owner. Looking at two W116 1978. One is 450sel with 4.5 V8 other is the 280SE. 280 has good body interior bad engine, six cylinder car. 450sel has bad body and interior but possibly descent engine. Not being knowledgeable I’d think same year cars I could swap 4.5 into the 280 but I have no idea. Honestly not being familiar with terms I wasn’t getting any results in search either. Can those more experienced tell me that’s it’s close and possible to put the 4.5 from the 450 into the 280 or does the 450sel have more v8 extras that make the 280 not worth swapping into. I own the 450 already. Saw the 280 and considering.

The 450sel is euro spec
The 280se is US ugly bumper car 😂
Thank you

@rumb thank you, can you tell me why, other than engine are they identical ? Is the 2.8 a better engine or is that just based on the fact that engine work would be easier than body/interior. Is the 450 SEL inferior to the 280SE hence fix the 2.8? I certainly respect your opinion but just not sure what the basis is that would help me determine which choice to make.

Thank you for expanding on your answer if possible.
