Hi friends. I just purchased a 1978 450 SLC and a 1973 450 SL. The SL I got for a parts car and the SLC were included in the deal as both had mechanic's lien. The SLC, as can be seen in the pictures has sat for quite a long time and while there are a few missing parts on the engine, the car is pretty much complete. It would make a very good parts car.
There is rust-through on the fenders and in many places on the body. The seats have wear but the door cards are in excellent shape. The 14" bundt wheels are there. I have the valet key but I do not have the trunk key and am not sure what is inside. I do not want to break the lock at this point but hopefully, will find a way to pop the trunk without damaging the lock. I will reach out to MB to open with a master key.
Underneath, the exhaust is loose but complete with the catalytic converters. The fuel distributor is missing as is the Becker which a Sony system is in its place. From what information I could get on the car's history for being at this shop was for rocker arm issues (probably more). I have a complete set of 16 brand-new rocker arms part # 1160551501 Febi Bilstein still in the box with numerous other parts that will fit this SLC and other V-8 R107s.
I would like to offer this SLC as a complete car but depending on the interest, I may eventually remove some parts for you. The car has a wealth of good parts. If you are interested in the entire car, you will need to tow it from North Carolina. For the whole car, I am asking $1200. Thanks much!
UPDATE #1 10/16/22:
I have started shooting pictures underneath the SLC and so far, it is quite solid. The spare tire well is very solid. The drainage openings are intact and the exhaust is complete but loose. Interestingly, the first aid kit is complete down to the brochures, scissors, and more. Please view the additional pictures.
UPDATE #2 10/17/22
Today, I went over the packet of service records on this SLC and for almost all of its life, all of the major systems had been regularly maintained. A lot of new OEM parts replaced the old parts. The exhaust, fuel pump, accumulator, filter, brakes including the master cylinder, thermostat, and much more were replaced. The shop that performed the majority of the work was and is still a highly reputable establishment.
What went wrong? From what I am finding; the valves had a not-so-cordial meeting with a piston(s) as the timing chain guides are broken, and the timing chain has jumped. This may explain why the rocker arms, cams, (and a lot more) needed to be replaced.
Sadly, it may have been too much for the owner to repair and subsequently, the car was abandoned. Being that an SLC was never in abundance as an SL, this car could possibly be restored but, there are some challenges.
The carpeting front and rear are in excellent shape and clean.
The suspension is tight and the car does not sag.
The left fender has rusted through at the brow.
The door sills are rusty and the cancer would need to be addressed from the roof down however, parts are still available.
The fuel distributor and other engine parts are gone.
The AC compressor is still there.
The engine would either need to be totally rebuilt or replaced but the end result of rebuilding may be the route to go because of what it is.
Since the car was kept on a concrete pad, there was also an active feral cat population in the area so there is no rodent damage.
I am unable to give this SLC what it needs as I have two SLs and my immaculate one-owner 380 SEL. I simply do not have the room but it is kept covered from the elements at my home. I hope somebody out there would use it for the wealth of parts or perhaps a candidate for restoration.
I will update again and post more pictures once I get the trunk opened and get completely under the car.
