I will get this thread going properly this weekend, but this will give us a place to start. Please feel free to post anything you like here that you think will be interesting regarding the 107 026.

The Ad

Texas500sl had posted a link to a "1979 450slc" on Houston area Craigslist. Since I check certain threads whenever I get a chance I saw that dgosh28 had already dismissed the car because it wasn't a d-jet and many parts would not interchange. I understand that logic, especially if it's a run-of-the-mill 1979 North American 450slc. But it clearly wasn't. Here's the text of the ad, with the pictures from the ad attached.

Mercedes Benz 450 slc - $3500

I'm selling my 1979 Mercedes Benz 450 slc with 128,000 miles and automatic transmission power windows. I'm asking $3500 o.b.o. If you have any questions or you would like to see the car my number is xxx xxx xxxx

----------------------------------

I immediately noticed the Euro (not 72-73 North American) bumpers, but also noticed the lack of a trunk handle (but not spoiler). The lack of a spoiler matched the theme of the side moldings being removed. The car had clearly been modified a bit. BUT, this car certainly had Euro bumpers and appeared to me to be (at the very least) a Euro 450slc. (At the very least, someone used a Euro parts car to put this one together.) So I immediately called.

I asked the seller for the VIN number, and he had it right there for me. That was about all I needed to hear... and that was at the $3500 price. Apparently it had more rust than I knew though, and the seller was up front about the rust "here and there". It still sounded a lot better than dgosh28's old car. I told the seller that I was helping someone in Houston find a car, and the seller would be getting a call from someone named Dan.

So despite dgosh28 dismissal of the car, I decided to urge him to take a look, and if he didn't buy it, I'd be tempted to buy it myself if he could check it out for me. What would I do with the car? I don't know, but this is the stuff you don't pass up. Right?

The rest is history. I talked to dgosh28 several times, and tried to teach him how to check the engine number to make sure there's a 5.0 in there before he purchases. But he went with his gut, which seems to have worked out well for him. If I saw the 5.0 and was happy with the way the car drove, I might haggle a little, but I can't imagine I would have gotten the seller as low as dgosh28 did. Good for dgosh. Hopefully he can take the money he saved on the purchase and use it towards the restoration.

EDIT: Direct links to CL pics while they are still alive. (Ad is gone, but pics linked in the PDF I made are still alive, for possibly higher resolution.)

EDIT ON 7/1/2012 at 10:15 PM Eastern/9:15 Pacific:

I don't want to have to page through pages of this thread to be able to look at pictures, so here are all the pictures I've seen up to page 10. (The "Attached Thumbnails" at the very bottom of this post are from the CL FS listing.)

And the lights from the 74 that will certainly be going in this 026:

BTW, if he's looking for a rear spoiler, I believe someone on here was selling one, new recently. They were asking $225 or something.

The car would have come with one, because spoiler delete got the handle.

At least the lack of side mouldings answers a question... do they look better without? My opinion? No. Sides look too slab like, makes it look like a barge.

Hey Steve, did it only get on the registry recently? or has it been on there for a while? If a while, do you know where the info about it came from? I'm just curious about it's story...

dgosh28 said he doesn't like the rubber spoiler anyway. So I'm sure putting one on would be at the bottom of his list. I think he needs to get the data card and build sheet/options as a first order of business. I should have asked him to do that before the weekend.

He did mention something about there being a smaller star in the trunk.

Since someone (WeatherMan?) pointed out the fact that the side moldings create a line that runs to the (small) bumpers, I have always hated when people take them off. The good thing is that dgosh won't have to go farther than his garage to get a set of moldings.

I think he has some hood damage that is keeping him from closing the hood or something. Crying shame with the aluminum hood, but he could get any 380 or 560 hood as a replacement. At least the deck lid looks good. That would be harder to replace.

I'd be curious to know if that was the original paint (and colour) too. looks like it's been resprayed at some point.

Any chance of of a photo of the option plate?

What's with the rear windscreen garnish moulding? Painted, or missing?

I can tell you right now, it's not a 1979. Its a 1978. 1979 year model started around chassis 000427

Awesome buy though!

Congrats!

Looks like it's already in the Registry: Mercedes 5.0/500 SLC Registry
The title has 1979 on it, but that could be incorrect. What do I look for on the car to confirm the year? Is there a difference between a 78 and 79 in performance, desirability, etc?

So, the big question is, what's the plan now? Please tell me you want to make it original again? The door trims... um.....

I absolutely would love to make it as original as possible. I will have to do it slowly though as my budget and skills are quite limited. Any pics/ documentation/ advise you can offer as a guy would be appreciated. I didn't notice a data tag on the car, like I have on my 74, but I will give the car a more thorough examination on Sunday and document what I find with photos.

Do you mouldings from the 74 match what would have been on the 5.0? If so, I need to keep them. If not, a member here is interested in them provided they are in good shape.
Also, the battery that was in the 5.0 is a 49 series, like the 74, but a different letter code. Does that matter? I am hoping to use the battery I just bought a few months ago for the 74 on this new car since the battery that came with the car doesn't seem to hold a charge.

Also, might be my eyes, but that rear star looks slightly to large to be correct...
When I picked up the car I noticed a small star emblem in the trunk and evidence in the paint that it was probably the correct emblem. I'm not sure why it was changed, but I will correct that if possible.

Also, shouldn't this car have a 5.0 badge on the right side of the trunk? How do I check if the trunk is aluminum? The car has been repainted, and probably not Maaco's best work, so I am concerned that things like the trunk may have been changed.

As you all know, I am still pretty green when it comes to 107's and especially these 026's. Could ya'll please chime in, as you did with the 74, and give me an idea of what kind of budget I should set for a long term restoration of this car. When I brought the 74 home I knew it was never going to be worth anything, but I was willing to spend some money just for the pleasure involved and the love of the car. I doubt I will ever be able to own another 1 of 150 "desirable" car in my lifetime so I really want to do this one right and leave something to my kids that they will be proud to own. I guess the question is " What should be my goal, budget wise, where I can have a nice car, but if I had to sell it for some reason I would still be okay?"

I didn't notice the rear moulding issue, but the chrome trim for the front glass was in the back seat. it looks to be in good shape, just not installed. Also, the sunroof is sealed with silicone. The po claims the motor works, but the weatherstripping ( seal?) was missing so he did that so it wouldn't leak. That will go on the list of things to fix. Maybe the 74 has a good part I can use, if I can get the top open.

You can check the rear decklid with a magnet.

The moldings should be exactly the same (afaik).

If the terminals are in the same place (they should be) you are fine to use the new battery.

Nice find on the 026. You do have a thing for the funky interiors, though!

If it fits in the battery box / tray then you are good to go.
