Hello: I looked and search this problem here and it seems to be common but I could not find the answer for the older models. Hot air coming from side vents AC on or off. Prior thanks to any help. Thanks

Your 1975 450SL has the early version of catalytic converters that reside on each bank of the exhaust manifolds. As you have found out, they put out a lot of heat.

Do a search on the R/C 107 forum. You will find the information there.
