1974 450sl air temperature sensor

My sl runs rough unless I unplug the air temp sensor in the air filter manifold. The car will miss fire at all speeds and it will start and then die right away with this sensor plugged in. Checking the sensor with an ohm meter, it checks out OK. With the sensor unplugged, the car runs great. Can someone help? What would cause this?<br>
