Does anyone know if the W201 2.0 ltr diesel Euro version was ever designated as a 200D in Europe, or were all W201s designated 190, regardless of the engine?

It was a 190d. All 201's were designated as 190's

200D vintage 07.75/02.76 - 04.85 was a W123. It used a OM615 engine. This is a non-crossflow engine.

All 190x models are listed here:

The 190D's used OM601 and OM602 engines. These are crossflow engines.

Hence, for a while Mercedes was producing two different 2.0 diesels, one for the 200D W123 and a different 2.0 engine for the 190D W201.
