Lately it’s been very difficult engaging first gear and reverse; I almost have to force it in gear. 2nd through 5th can do require some ‘effort’ but it is far easier than first.
Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this would be very mush appreciated.

i have a 190e 2.3 16v 1986 and having the same problem. will keep an eye open for a fix..

Other than fluid.

High idle speed or bad clutch hydrolics.

These are the two gear selections that depend on proper disengament of the clutch the most.

Others may have more ideas.

I had this issue on a '92 2.0l manual. Have you adjusted the gear linkages? Might be worth a look, it did help my car but then the clutch went!!
