can anyone offer any experience on the ride/noise/handling difference 19 inch wheel upgrade on a 99 amg e55. the ride is sort of rough now. I wonder if it gets noticeably stiffer and louder. NY streets are really tough on cars. Any input much appreciated

No benefits in 19 inch wheels - for looks only!

I desired 19 inch wheels also, however, the streets are just to bad here in the DC area. When I drive my E55 I imagine how bad the ride would be or how much damage I could have sustained if I had 19's instead of 18.

What is the use - the tire widths remain the same at 245 & 275. Usually when you do a plus-1 upgrade you benefit from a wider tire. If I could go 255 up front and 285 in back maybe I would consider.

The US E55 tire sizes are 245/40/18 front & 275/35/18 rear.

You can go 285/30/18 in back but the front is maxed out with 245 width.

General rule of thumb; when you upgrade to 19" wheel and tire combinations your sedan definetly looks more aggressive. However your trade-off is going to be comfort and noise. I am running Bridgestone S-03 245/35 19" and 275/30 19." Excellent traction and "ok" road noise. Just be careful not to run over potholes.

285 30 -18

Kev - have you put this tire on the back of your
e-55 ?

I'm ready for a new set, and would like to go "plus one" in width. 19's look funny to me on this car.

If you have actually gone to 285 30-18's, - any difference in ride quality ? THX !

B.Garrett, I have not done it. There is plenty of room in back for wider tires and wheels like a 10" but the fron is really maxed out with 245. There is a guy (James Cannon) at www.mbworld.org that put 285/30/19. Here is the pic:
