Noticed on its "maiden voyage" this weekend that my side exhibits wind noise above maybe 70-80. Really kills an otherwise near-silent cabin. Unless my ears are way off, the sound is clearly traceable to the junction of the door and rear window. The seals are soft, though some of the seals around the windows and trim feel like they are getting "lazy," but there's nothing visually-apparent that would be causing this. Passenger side is quiet. I am left to assume it's the seal for the rear quarter window, but if not, what else could it be?

Steve,

If this were Jeopardy you'd be Ken Jennings. Thanks for the replies. That said, the thread you sent, unless I'm dense, shows pics for both the piece you suspect, and some window trim. All the replies I see on that thread are related to the window trim. I will look at the car tomorrow, but do you have a part number for the piece you refer to?

On a side note, I was relieved to see I'm not the only one who can't make sense of the RBM (and other) diagram-to-part matrices and also the variations in part numbers (and often EXTREME price differences)

Sadly you need to invest in a sound level meter and have someone help you poke around for the intensity of noise?

will, did you have your climate system on at the time? I've noticed with mine that it is absolutely tomb like quiet until I get up to the 80-100 mph area. Then I get an slight air sound that I believe comes from one of the AC system modules. And since I only use the normal settings it has to be the vent on the passenger side. Am I going to do anything about it? Hell no. It's a 20 year old car that runs perfectly with no leaks or snafus. Why would you pole a sleeping dog with a sharp stick?

This piece is intact

Does your lower window seal look like this?

If it does, you are in for an expensive replacement.

More info:

Good luck,
Steve
The sound is also clearly coming from where the windows meet, further up, not in the door. I can put my ear to it, head level. I can lean over and it has to be coming from there. Question is, since other people have certainly experienced this before me, is it more likely the seal, or the window not fitting in the right exact place and needing to be adjusted? I don't want to order a $eal if the $$eal is not the issue

I cannot help with this, I am sorry. Haven't had the pleasure to drive much or to repair exterior/interior trim.

On my car, the PO had, for unknown reasons, messed with the lower seals (the ones pictured) and they were damaged. The source of road noise in my case is believed to be in that area.

The replacement seals have arrived, but my love-affair with the coupe is over and I haven't touched her in over a month.

If window seals pass visual inspection, my understanding is that both the front and the rear windows have some adjustment built-in. This is perhaps what you should do before contemplating window seal replacement.

Good luck,
Steve

There are some intermittent fan noises that are coming from vents, and yes it was on (it was close to 90 this weekend) but the noise, to my ear, is from my side only, back toward where these windows meet. The next question is where the intermittent fan whine is coming from

Could it be this?

Kind of hard to see but I did my best. I was looking at pass and driver sides, trying to compare any differences. The only visible difference I noted was that the rear window rubber that goes between it and the door glass does not fully extend up underneath the "underlayer" seal at the roof/sheet metal.

What I mean is, you can see the outer seal, and if you lift that up, you can see an inner seal underneath. With the rear windows fully raised, the topmost part of the rear window seal is still visible on the drivers side as it does not fully dissapear under the roof seal. 3 questions:

1) is this a potential culprit
2) is the seal a problem
3) is the window the problem (ie not raising far enough)

Mine has some minor wind noise beginning around 70 or so, doesn't really increase. Usually I have the stereo on and it totally masks it. I've been told that door adjustment is critical, and that the weight of the doors causes them to move over time. You'd probably need an sensitive older Benz tech to really run this down for you.

Mine has a bit of wind noise coming from the passenger side rear window, as well.. the rear windows can be adjusted vertically, horizontally, and laterally- I have the WIS instructions on how to do this adjustment, but note that it does require you to take apart the side paneling, and the exterior plastic molding.

If memory serves me, it was one of the window seals. I believe this was the vertical seal between the door and quarter window. I do remember it must have been a failure point, because the replacement part is a different material than the original (felt vs rubber covered, can't remember right now which one was the new and the old)

Also, if your soft-close is not completely STAR-synched, the glass may not be closing completely.

I am parting out a 1999 CL500, AZ rust free car. If any of you need parts, check out my Ebay store "Dr Benz 140 Coupe Parts' as I have over 70 items listed. Thanks, Tommy aka DrBenz
Unfortunately, used seals will not fix his problem, Tommy. The part has been redesigned. If you had bothered to read that first, maybe you would have chosen not to pollute YET ANOTHER THREAD with your spam.

Mods - how is this guy still allowed to do this? This has been out of control for a YEAR. NO VALUE and NO POSTS other than trying to offload ONE CAR that comprises his eBay "store."
