Guys,

I may be purchasing a 300E and the window trim appears to be a sort of bronze. What is it? Can the Autoglym chrome polish or any chrome polish be used safely to protect it from the elements, or is there a better choice?

Thanks,
Drew

anodized aluminum. Once it's cloudy it can be polished but the results are not long lasting. replacement is the best bet.

Drew,
My 300CE has bronze trim also which can be bought in bronze as aftermarket product. (Was on the car when I bought it).
I don't use a chrome polish on it myself, rather I use a more general cleaning fluid and canuba wax.

Bit hard to tell from the pictures but here is examples.
The second picture shows CHROME DOR HANDLE against the BRONZE door trim.

If your trim appears bronze then it's due to weathering and UV which causes the discoloration.

The trim when new was a satin black color....

My trim was black when I took the car off the showroom floor in May of 1988.

The "300 Class" 1988 sales brochure shows black trim regardless of how light or dark or solid or metallic the color is...

Go to a Merc parts department or look up the trim in the EPC and there are no different part numbers that define a color choice....

If the trim is bronze or silvery then it's weathered....

No-one seems to have a definitive answer on this issue from all the reading I have done. I understand the fading to bronze opinion but seriously my trim is not defective or patchy it is definitely a smooth bronze colour on every piece of trim on the vehicle ! Based on some comments I have read I am beginning to believe that maybe dealers may have dressed vehicles with non standard items such as this. The post I found below seems to indicate that he indeed bought his 300CE NEW with bronze trim !

"...1988 300 CE window trim color
I've got a Brown 1988 300 CE with a broken back glass. My local MB dealer says the outside trim (3 pieces) must be replaced in order to fix the glass. They say the trim only comes in black. My car has bronze trim. I purchased the car new and know the trim color is original and was never black, but MB says it is only available in black. My color brochure that came with the car shows the car with bronze trim. If you move the clip on the existing trim the color below appears black....'

This picture from another post is what people are calling the faded to bronze !

NOPE that ain't what color my trim is - mine is bronze/gold have a look at images I posted earlier !

You've had a definitive answer but you just don't accept it...

Doesn't "If you move the clip on the existing trim the color below appears black" tell you that the trim was only black ( not to mention that the above clearly states "MB says it is only available in black" ).
If the quote you posted was from an original owner as stated then if it's black under the clip, it was overall black when new.

If it was a factory option ( which it wasn't ) as you and others are trying to believe then the full trim would not have a trace of black.

Yes your trim is smooth and bronze which is the same as my trim after twenty three years...however it was black when I bought the car new in 1988 and the recent trim removal for paint still showed black in areas that weren't exposed to the sunlight....

As far as the comment "my color brochure that came with the car shows it as bronze ", pages 36-38 feature what appears to be a "Desert Taupe ( 441 )" 300CE.
The pic of the vehicle in the lower left corner of page 38 clearly shows the trim as black.

Not saying that some dealers may have offered a "gold package", in fact AMG Central in Westmont IL offered gold option along with color match trim on pre merger AMG builds.

The trim on my '87 300TD is kind of a chalky grey, and the trim on the '90 300D is a bronzish color
So, the trim on the '87 appears to be painted, and it also applies to the roof rails and luggage bars, while the '90 appears to be anodized, which may account for the fading from black to bronze.

Nahhhhh I'm happy to accept the definitive answer. :D

I'm just not sure about what is on my particular vehicle. It just looks too even in its color and brightness - like it was produced that way !

Gold ? AMG ? Now your talking !
So special colored trim pieces may have been made for/by AMG !
Would the gold trim have been a black set that have been powder coated or something ?

Looking at this picture is it a possibility that what I am referring to as "bronze" is in fact "gold" ?

My car's PO is an aftermarket specialist supplier of MB, Audi and coutless other products with accessories sourced from around the world including AMG, Lorinser & Zender. They are doing an aftermarket carbon fibre upgrade to an Aston Martin at the moment !

I might give him a call and see whether he replaced the trim as he did a major refurbishment of the car when he bought it including paint, underbody, interior etc. It is the sort of thing he could well have done as it was his own personal vehicle as well as being a "dress up car" for aftermarket products. He should be able to provide an answer - for my car anyway.

Similar to the W201, I thought that the bronze trim color is for metallic paint (dark paint)? The black trim color is for "pastel" or solid colors.

Bronze

Black
Seems like pre 90's had black while post 90's had the bronze tinge.

Maybe we can get a "survey" here for kicks to get the general pattern. My mother's 1990 300TE has black (chalky) trim.

A part of my 1988 300ce's is a light black color as stated previous. This part is not exposed to sunlight. The parts that are exposed to sunlight are now a bronze color as stated above.

So what to do with this trim? Now these cars look like they have both gold and chrome trim including the grille, emblems, and the later models have chrome trim along top of the lower rocker panelling.

Gold plate em, chrome plate em, paint them to match the paint color, repaint them black, or try to see if you can replace them only to have this happen again?

I have an 89 coupe, my trim is bronze, if it was in fact, once black then that is the best patina I have ever seen on a car, the bronze looks fantastic.
Obviously, if that is the case then aesthetically, it's going to be a problem should we need to replace part of it.

Ya, my new coupe has "bronze" trim. I find it a bit odd and not a fan of it not matching the chrome trim on the bumpers and socce panels.

Wonder how easy it would be to remove the trim and take it somewhere to get anodized black or powdercoated black. Or even re-chromed.
