Anyone have spare Coolant Expansion tank sensor cable? I recently changed my old yellow expansion tank with New to me JY white expansion tank and when removed a cable , it disintegrated in my hand. So much for Old Mercedes quality that lasted only "23 years" :).
Now Idiot light is always on in cluster.
Unfortunately time won't permit me to stop at Jy soon so asking community if someone have spare one and willing to part.

Those connectors are available at very reasonable cost from MB. You should get another 23 years!

1990 300D 2.5 for Sale - $995

It's got approximately 452,800 on the clock. Yup, almost half a million miles.

I bought it from a guy who was moving out of town and just had to get it out of his driveway.

I haven't put a lot of work into it, so I'm pricing it accordingly. Most of what it needs from what I can tell at this point is detail stuff and nothing terribly expensive - things I wouldn't think would affect your ability to drive it while you make the remaining repairs.

The transmission was rebuilt a few years ago based on an invoice that came with the car. It shifts crisply as you would expect an MB transmission to do so. That's the extent of the service records I could find. When I recently got the car it got the oil and filter changed, coolant flushed and filled with fresh Mercedes coolant, new fuel filters and a new air filter. I topped off the AC system which has been converted to R134a. I pulled the cluster and relamped it. I also replaced all of the crappy aluminum fuses with good quality copper ones.

It runs strong, temperature holds steady at 85C during cruise, tracks straight without pulling when braking, brakes are good, rides as you would expect a W124 to do so - a little hard but sporty, if you could say that about a diesel.

The AC blows cold and the Kumho tires appear to be nearly new and have little wear. The power sunroof works. The interior is amazingly clean considering the age and presumed miles on the car. The central locking system works. The back seat is so clean and unused I have been having a hard time getting the bottom seat cushion back in place because the upholstery is so clean and the springs/cushions are uncompressed.

Here are the detail items I have noticed:

Passenger and both rear windows do not work. I'm assuming the rear windows need regulators, as one of them will slide down on its own. Rear window regulators can be had for as little as $50 new on Amazon. It's possible the switches might just need cleaning, I haven't investigated this further.

Power seat adjusters on front seats work, but need the little buttons replaced.

Original Becker stereo works, but the front speakers are "muddy" sounding and the right rear doesn't sound like it's working. A new antenna mast is needed. I can hear the antenna motor run when you turn the radio on/off.

Windshield washer fluid reservoir needs a plug in the spare hole where the (optional) headlight washer pump would go.

Outside temperature display in the instrument cluster is bad. Wow! Never seen that.

Center AC vent doesn't work, so I'm assuming it's the vacuum actuator. Blows like crazy out the side and defroster vents, and the fan adjusts accordingly to temperature settings. The monovalve is bad and I have clamped the line off.

Cruise control does not work.

Based on the vibration at idle, the engine mounts probably need replacement.

Lower bumper skirt is cracked at front right. A fair number of rock chips in the hood and some dings all around.

Long story short, this isn't a showroom car, so please don't come with high expectations. I have tried to describe it as best I can. It is being sold "as-is, where-is".

Interested? Drop me a PM.

Dan

Wow - that seems like a very good price. When I see a car with miles that high, I typically feel like it must have been a well maintained car. As we all know, w124 seem to have a death spiral as things get neglected and start adding up. Somebody definitely kept up with things on that one.

Aside from the miles it looks like a lot of car for the money.

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone.

Yes, I'm sure the one thing that freaks everyone out when they see this is the mileage, but from what I can piece together about the car's past is seems like it may have belonged to someone who had multiple residences across the country and went back and forth regularly.

Whoever they were they couldn't have been too big! I say that because the upholstery is in amazingly good shape. There is a small tear on the drive's side bolster where you would normally expect to see some serious damage by now. Other than a wipe down with a wet cloth and a good vacuuming I haven't done anything to the interior or upholstery.

The interior is in really good shape, too, which to me shows some indication that previous owners took good care of it.

It nails at idle but clears out immediately upon acceleration/load so I suspect that the injectors could probably use a rebuild. I haven't put a whole tank of fuel through it yet so I don't have an idea of mileage, but I'm hoping to do that within the next week if it's not sold. I'm really curious to find out what kind of mileage it gets. It runs well, shifts crisply and rides like a W124 should.

For someone who wants/needs inexpensive transportation that gives good mileage and can take the time to pick away at the stuff it needs it could be a good car.

I'm going to continue to work on it as long as I have it, so the list of needs will continue to go down as time goes on. I just don't plan on doing a complete clean up/fix up as I don't want to invest the $$ in something I probably can't recoup the costs from.
