Does the coolant have any other function then to cool the engine? I'm not sure how complex the ML is.

Primary function is to cool the engine and prevent the liquid from freezing. It also allows the heater to operate. This is a basic function of all vehicles and internal combustion engines that are liquid cooled.

In addition to what sosh pointed out, I believe the tranny coolant lines also run through the radiator. Thus, the tranny is cooled via the engine coolant.

This is definetly very helpful. My coolant was near empty and the light came on. Drove on it for a couple of days and finally filled the coolant to cold level. No more light and the ML seems more responsive. It must of affected the tranny fluid. Thanks for everyones your help

-Water actually is the medium used to transfer the heat from the engine. Coolant is added to lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point of water. In addition as stated before, coolants also have various formulations for certain engine materials to prevent corrosion.

At a minimum, change your coolant on the recommended three year interval and use MB coolant.

Check the lower hose clamp! could be the TSB applies.
In the mean time, tighten the clamp to stop the leak, most I find leaking stop after tightening.
AND Dont drink it, however high you may get, and how sweet it is, you will also get dead.
