Car I'm getting is a UK 1988 500SEC. It has tri-ys and dual snorkels.

Because it's an 88, and has tri ys and dual snorkels, I'm assuming it's a 10:1 CR model.

It also has a cat con. however.

Can anyone clarify

a) if it should be a 10:1 CR car
b) did the KAT version have any other differences to the RUF version, other than cat con and EGR stuff? Ie, are the cams etc the same?

Thanks,
Ryley

Find the engine serial # on the back of the block near the firewall (driver's side). I believe all ECE/RUF engines are 117.968 xxx xx serials. There may be HV stamped after the serial #. The CR can also be denoted by a backwards E followed by 10:1 on the heads.

I'm not a real expert on this, so others may comment to correct me.

The HV versions of the 117.965 (5.0's) were made w/ tri-y's or logs for KAT versions.

If yours has TY's then most likely 10:1 - if logs, might go either way, be a lower compression (9:0) version if optioned, or 10:1, which is likely. Your car may have been fitted w/ cats later on as some TY cars were.

There should be a decal on the lower right of the radiator support. That will show EZL diagrams - a good hint of the engine's configuration is there as well as the aforementioned block stamping.

thanks guys. haven't picked the car up yet, so can't give you definitive answers on the stickers. it does have some that look like ignition timing pictures though.

It does have the option code

"362 RHD vehicle according to EEC regulation "

but it also has

"256 Performance Media AMG " ... Which is an LSD afaik

so, assuming it is a 10:1, and being a 1988, and by that stage they only offered the 10:1 CR models- in either RUF or KAT spec (except china who still got a 9:1)

research on the latest (post 87-88) RUF/KAT 560s suggests the only difference was the cat converters, and the cams and everything else was the same between the two options (and hence 200/220kW)

can anyone confirm for the 5 litre? (185/195kW)

question is, is the cat converter the only difference between the engines, or did they fiddle with the cams also?

thanks!
