Hi all - im new to forum and vito's & have just experienced my first problem (of many i believe lol)The heater booster on my 2003 vito 112 was working fine until i jump started my friends car - my van & heater were running.... until i connected the live jump lead to my batttery (stupid me!) and accidently touched the seat frame too (even stupider me!) - causing it to spark and short out... the van cut out but re started no problems. since this the aux heater does not work. I have checked all relevant fuses via the handbook and they are ok - i even put new ones in just to be sure.

Can any one offer any advice? control unit maybe?. The light on the dash button is still on. -5 outside + a foot of snow and i blow up the best thing about my van! Any help is greatly appreciated as im going to be freezing!

great forum by the way - just what i need right now

many thanks

Hi ya, have you checked the glow plug on the heater. That would be my first guess if the light comes on and the fuses are ok

Hi ya, yes to all your questions except the last. Glow plugs break for the strangest of reasons, you can get them on ebay or your local auto factor but be careful you get the right one for the booster heater and not the engine as they are different, they arnt expensive. The easiest way is to take the plug out and test it either by putting a current through it or by testing it with a multimeter. Its fairly easy to get at as it is under the van inline with the passenger seat. You will need to take the heat sheild off 4 bolts and then you will see it, be carefull you can break them very easily.
You have got pleanty of diesel in the van because the booster wont work if there is less than a certain amount (i think its 10ltrs) in the tank.

hi martin- i got under the van today & found the glow plug. Is it the small unit with a wiring connector & a thin diesel line going in the end? I havent tested it but the stealers say £98+vat & im not sure what will happen if i take the fuel line off- will i need to bleed it?. The fuel was low yesterday & the fuel light did come on a couple of times so i put £20 in today & it still doesnt work. I need to test the plug but any other ideas in there? Cheers. Jon.

hi ya, you dont need to take the heater off the van, just undo the 4 bolts holding the heat shield and you will then be able to remove the glow plug from the end of the heat chamber. Be carefull as they can be damaged. There are 2 ways of testing them, youcan test with a multimeter for a circuit through the glow plug or my favorite is get 2 pieces of wire, connect one piece of wire to the end of the glow plug and 1 piece to the body, you then put the glow plug down on a surface that wont catch fire and dont touch the plug. Connect the wire on the end of the glow plug to the live and connect the other wire to negative, see if the plug gets hot. if it doesnt it is knacked.

That price form merc is a con, i got mine on ebay and i paid i believe £19 inc del. I wouldnt pay that sort of money for a glow plug if it had bells and was gold plated

Martin:thumbsup:

nice one mate. I have the multi meter & will update soon. I think the guy at merc didnt have a clue & plucked a figure out the air. Today all traction lights & abs etc came on- then they went back off & all is normal again. I heard a rumour there heaters need to be reset if they dont ignite after 3 attempts. Glow plug tomor & then il update.. Cheers martin.

Glow plugs

I too, need to fix mine.

I wonder if these people will vend the appropriate part?

Glow plugs | Diesel heater plugs | Diesel glow plugs

I have been told that VW fitted the same webasto heater, and sell the same glowplugs for £25. Slightly better than £89 that merc request.

This is only scurrilous rumor spreading, BTW...

Another thing is if you have run it low on diesel you will need to possibly switch the booster on and off 2 or 3 times to bleed the diesel through to it. I will have a part number for the plug and let you know where to get it tomoz because i aint going out there tonight cause its to cold and snowy:thumbsup:

hi guys, sorry about the delay. I have removed & tested the glow plug - it does not warm up so is faulty. Im off to pick another one up now from gsf so fingers crossed. What do people know about these units going in to a safe mode due to it being turned on a few times & failing to ignite? Thanks for the part numbers martin- mine had an even older number of 0 100 226 228 def not been changed before so they must be reliable enough. Enjoy & il up date soon. Safe mode opinions please :)

Hi sul, its a beru number 0 100 226 228, the original number was 0100 226 173 which was superseeded by 0100 226 340 on mine. I have no idea what the difference is as the heaters are identical

Cheers Martin
