Hello everyone - thanks to all the good advice and information on this forum, I am now the proud owner of a silver 1999 SLK 230 manual transmission with CD, Sport Package and Salsa/Charcoal interior. The car has only 32,000 one-owner miles, has been garaged at home AND at work, and has never been driven in the winter. It is in immaculate condition.

Since I got the car for about a thousand dollars less than I was prepared to spend ($20k), I have decided to invest about $1,000 up front in extras and/or upgrades.

My question to you ... what would you buy? What do you think provides the most "bang for the buck" for this model? Sound system? Exhaust? A windscreen? Car care products? Console inserts? A new hat for my wind blown hair? My wife wants me to bank the money for the inevitable repairs and maintenance costs ... Quite reasonable and quite practical - but not at all fun ...

I know this is subjective, but I'd be interested in any and all thoughts on how to spend my money!

Either stereo or BVRC. Full stereo was my first mod, but it is worth way more than $1000 so i think thats outside your budget. So get a BVRC - its a remote control for the roof, its the coolest little thing ever.

welcome [8D]
did you buy the car from a dealer or an individual? i bought mine from a dealer (thank god). it has spent some time at the doctor (headlight switch was out, car pulled to the left, fog lights held water, instrument backlighting out, weak a/c, windows leaking, trunk leaking, rear defrost broken and loss of power). luckily i have a GREAT dealer and they paid for all of it after my 1 month/1000 miles (about $2500). so, if you got it from an individual: hang on to your extra $$$$ you may need it. With a manual transmission I think I would have to change the exhaust. That's what I did. The stock exhaust sounds so weak. I like my ASP pulley but I love my exhaust. Sometimes I have to put down the windows in the winter time just to hear it while I go thur the gears. Then put the windows back up so I don't get cold.[:D]

Strongly suggest you put that $1000 in a fixed income account that preserves the capital and provides some return. You WILL have to use it to pay for some repairs in the future and you will be glad you have that in the bank.

If you want to live dangerously, put that money in the stock market. [:)]

RADIO! My first upgrade was a new radio!

Buy a new radio. You can leave in the stock speakers and amp and you will have a dramatic improvement in sound. It makes such a big difference.

Windscreen. Replace the mesh netting with a nice plexiglass windscreen that not only looks great, but works great.

You can get both for $1000

Pulley, New Head Unit, Windscreen. If you shop well you can get everything (including a good HU) for less than $1k.

JohnBoy, my wife works for a hospice - good call.
I would recommend painting the calipers, getting the car detailed, and the vario-roof. Should have enough left over to take it out and get a nice steak [:D]

WEll you can buy some toy and phone your friend and tell him you bought a toy and tomorrow he will go out and buy the same toy and then you will both have the same thing.

Or you can spend $1000 on petrol (gas) and drive across America or go Canada to Mexico and show us all photos we have never seen before.

So when someone asks you what you did last week (trust me its possible) - you can say - drove across America ... what did you do.

Night on the town with a high end escort? [:D]

Okay, seriously of the suggestions so far I would go with the warranty. It could even return some value to you when you sell the car.
That would have to be a polar night (the ones that last an hour).

www.monalisamodels.com .... something about $50,000 ?
