  1. 50 mph, The Dreaded Vibration

    W140 S-Class
Roadforce balancing my Eltanins with Continental tires got rid of my shimmy issues. Before I did that, readjusting front wheel bearing freeplay made a big difference also. I still get shake for 5 miles after letting the car sit overnight, until they get themselves round again. I thought the...
  2. 50 mph, The Dreaded Vibration

    W140 S-Class
EPC says the 8x16 wheels came with different tires as well. Why we didn't get the 8.5x18s like the UK did, I don't know. Doesn't make sense. Jon
  3. 50 mph, The Dreaded Vibration

    W140 S-Class
None of those are standard wheels. In fact the page says "upgrades". Edit: I stand corrected. While my 95 S600 came with 7.5x16 all around, Mercedes EPC says model year 95 up came with 8.0x16 on the rear only. But then it says 96 and up came with 7.5x16 all around, so who knows. There were a...
  4. 50 mph, The Dreaded Vibration

    W140 S-Class
I have 94 and 95 S600 US spec coupes, and both came with 7.5x16" wheels front and rear, just like the sedans. Some Euro coupes came with 8.5x18" wheels front and rear. I have a UK brochure indicating those were standard there. I'm not aware of any US coupes that came with staggered wheels from...
  5. Vacuum lines

    W140 S-Class
At the connector for the line coming from the floor to the seat? A picture would help. Jon
  6. Pre lubing of New Genuine Mercedes Window Regulator; Front Right for Power Window P/N: 140720304

    W140 S-Class
Absolutely lubricate it liberally in every area that rotates or slides. W140 windows are extremely heavy, and any friction will make regulators fail quickly. Use a quality synthetic grease that won't harden with age. Jon
  7. Vacuum lines

    W140 S-Class
Cap it either at the pump, OR the front of the seat. There should only be one line at the front of each seat for the bladders. Jon
  8. 50 mph, The Dreaded Vibration

    W140 S-Class
Any looseness anywhere can be excited vibrationally by any number of things. How they all combine on a given car and manifest themselves is unique. Something about the W140 makes it very sensitive to vibrations. Jon
  9. 50 mph, The Dreaded Vibration

    W140 S-Class
The other thing that makes an amazing amount of difference is wheel bearing adjustment. Mercedes has very tight tolerances for this, and it can make a world of difference if they are even slightly loose. You really need a dial indicator and magnetic stand to measure it properly. Jon
  10. heater control

    W140 S-Class
Left front of the engine compartment. Looks like the photo below. Shorter cylinders are solenoids that control the heat for each side of passenger compartment. Taller cylinder is pump for circulation coolant for the engine after shutoff and for heat after shutting off the car. Solenoids can go...
  11. Dead Battery, Trunk Locked - Alternator Jumpstart??

    W140 S-Class
I don't think it's just the radio. That was just an example. Whenever you leave the car for more than a few days, put a float charger on it. Jon
  12. Dead Battery, Trunk Locked - Alternator Jumpstart??

    W140 S-Class
If you pull the key out, then put it back in, you are ok, as long as you don't turn it. If you left the key in the off position, but didn't pull it out, you leave some systems activated, such as the radio. Jon
  13. Ongoing ASR issue when cold.

    W140 S-Class
Try removing and reseating the ASR and ETA modules. Make sure they are fully seated, using a rubber mallet if you need to. I had a similar issue, and that cured it for me. Jon
  14. Evaporator (what year was the change)

    W140 S-Class
In general, that's correct. But if the system has ever lost pressure and been recharged, who knows if moisture got in? What we don't know about those cars that have had evaporator replacement is what the lifetime history of the system was. Was there a fender bender that damaged the AC system...
  15. Got My MB STAR C4 Diagnostic Tool Today!

    R129 SL-Class
32bit Windows, which is what these hard drives come with, can only address a hair over 3gb of memory. Going to 4 gb from 3 buys you very little. On the other hand, getting a solid state hard drive will make a huge difference in speed. Jon
  16. Hagerty News

    W140 S-Class
Amen to that. I've restored one car, a Porsche 914/6, to concours winning condition, and it took years and megabucks. Every single part was disassembled, cleaned and repainted, replated or replaced with new parts to as new condition. Never again, as we could never really enjoy the car for fear...
  17. Evaporator (what year was the change)

    W140 S-Class
It's highly unlikely that the evaporator would corrode from the outside in. Moisture in the refrigerant because of a bad receiver dryer and corrosion from the inside out is far more likely. The evaporator I changed didn't have a trace of corrosion on the outside, and where I live is very humid...
  18. W140 running problem

    W140 S-Class
Those diagrams are for the early LH injected engines. Hopefully, someone will post the correct diagram. Jon
  19. W140 running problem

    W140 S-Class
The vacuum diagram is normally on a sticker on top of the fresh air box in the engine compartment. Jon
  20. W140 Picture thread

    W140 S-Class
Remember this car? https://jalopnik.com/here-s-a-cheap-v12-mercedes-s600-coupe-it-just-comes-w-1830904212 It was only 2 hours away, so I went and looked at it. Bought it for $2250. Now it looks like these photos, after 8 months of work. Turns out there wasn't any mold, just mildew on leather...
