I think that when I re-do mine I'll probably go with a thin gauge vinyl coated wire rope.

Like the coated wire thought. Should be a pretty solid way to handle it as long as the loop end is super solid.
I remember seeing a post like this before about an added release. I'll have to dig that up and save it as well. Would be nice on the coated wire if some wheels/pulleys could be placed at pivot points to give the cable a smooth operational run. Maybe a p n p trip to get one of those internal emergency trunk release handles. Hmmmm
