I knew that question was coming......

The dimming for the instrument/panel illumination is electronic. As I do not have the specs for the electonic dimmer unit in the car, and I suspect it isn't cheap if i blow it up, or overheat it, I decided not wire my three gauges backlighting into that circuit.

Instead, I got power from the cigarette lighter power wire, and ran it thru a large dimmer rheostat out of an old car headlight switch. I played around with the amount of resistance untill each gauge was about the same brightness and to my liking. Then I soldered the wires to the resistor, and installed the entire resistor into the back of the tray.

The toggle switch is simply there as an on/off switch for the backlighting. Doesn't matter if I leave the switch on, cigarette lighter circuit is only alive with key in position 1 or 2.
