2013 GL 550 with original trans and diff fluids

Hi All,

Visiting with friend who has 2013 5.5 GL ... 120,000 miles and has never changed transmission fluid. Nor differential fluids. She said local indie said not to change either.

Given the mileage, what is the recommended course of action ... I'm familiar with the argument regarding changing old fluid, but know the argument is simply that ...

Options: do nothing, flush/change, or partial change to avoid "fluid shock?"

My person opinion on the trans - limited background - is to pick a safe spot for her. Have indie drop pan and replace filter, replace that fluid. Then drain and replace fluid two more times. Gets new fluid, avoids rapid cleaning, and replaces the filter. If it was mine, I would drop the pan, see if it had a torque converter drain bolt and drain it as well.

Differentials and transfers are a different beast. I would probably drain and replace rear differential, for sure, but no real feel for the front and transfer case.

BTW - I had posted this in the wrong forum with the wrong date yesterday - trying to get it where it needs to be today. Sorry if any confusion.

Thoughts?

OK. Will hop back over the "other" forum.

BTW - it is actually the 4.7 with twin turbos, not an actual 5.5L V8.

I have the 2014,ML 550-same engine 4.7 twin turbo.
I would to the front/rear dif and the t case,and trans.That I would do a couple more times till the fluid looked new. I would not flush the trans.I was a biz maanger of a tras shop and say many units replaced before a flush and after it dislodged material that was best left alone needed to be rebuilt.

If they skipped the driveline maintenance I would also do the engine oil,brake fluid and coolant just to start fresh

I think the fluid is now advised by MB to be changed at some point so I would follow that advice. I changed mine at about 120K I think. FLUID IS EXPENSIVE and I think your idea of changing it all 2 or 3 times seems excessive.

Well that is on her then... If she feels comfortable doing that then go for it. I mean congrats she managed to save about $1,000 total from not changing the fluids. I am sure you can find a new tranny for under that price I would personally find a local shop to change the fluids and filter. Better safe then sorry. That is what I would do.
