Sprinter: Cabin heater fix!

As some of you may know, the cabin heater on my sprinter has not worked since I owned the vehichle.

I finally got on to it with a friend and found that the main wiring loom for the heater (in the engine bay) had dropped down and was resting on the engine thus causing all the wires to melt and short the system.

Fix: snip off the melted part of the wires, stip back plastic coating on wires and solder the wires back together and tape up around solder joint with electircal tape. Tape up nice and tight with some heatproof tape and attach to airbox to hold nice and tight AWAY from the engine!!!

Then check the 30 amp fuse located under the drivers seat and in my case if it is blown, replace it!

voila, you now have a warm van!!

Although i know have a working fan, it wil only work on speed four. I remeber reading somewhere on how to fix this problem but can't find the post. Does anybody have a link or better, know how to fix this?

cheers Jay

Jay

I seem to recall that these motors were controlled by a big power resistor with various tappings and this was used for the lower speeds, and then full speed was basically 12v straight to the motor bypassing the resistor

It would maybe seem that your resistor has gone open circuit and not getting juice thru to the motor, tried tracing the cable all the way? Ballache job i know.

Jay had the same fan speed problem last week, it was caursed by a burnt out resistor bought and fitted new resistor problem solved.
My 316cdi 51 plate had the resistor located under the bonnet fixed into thetop of the fan housing with two wiring plugs going to it. Its a bit orkwad to get at the screws that hold it into place but once undone its easy to remove and replace.
