just bought a 313cdi sprinter need help

hi all, bought a 2000 model 313cdi sprinter my2000 and glow plug light sometimes stays on and sometimes on start up stays on for a couple of mintues then goes away. i did a pre purchase inspection and the only major thing found was the rocker cover on top has a plastic cover, under the plastic cover an insulation is there to stop the injecters freezing, well this insulation melts here in australia because of the hot heat summers we have, they say its a major repair later, as to get to the injecters they might need to pull the engine out and some how clean the tar looking stuff off the rocker cover to get to the injectors and there has been a few times where its impossiable so hmmmmmm each injector is $700, any ideas how to clean this melted plastic??? and the glow plug light which only sometimes stays on, the van has travelled 413000kms. but drives like a baby

I wouldn't worry about the glow plug light, it's either one of your glow plugs is down ro the relay. Chances it's a glow plug since the cdi engine doesn't really need them to start.

As for the other stuff.. No idea!

Hi mate,

You would not need to replace the glow plugs or relay, but in the near future you would have to remove head and machine out the glow plugs because if the are not working the seize up in the head

The black stuff in the tappet cover valley is half burnt diesel, possible that the injector bolts had come loose, you would have to break off the tappet cover, distroy the injectors to remove the head, if you can post a picture it would help to have a look ( ex Mercedies Benz LCV Tech)

Hi from a fellow Aus.

I am in Adelaide and also have a LWB 313CDI that I have converted toa Motorhome/Campervan.

I had a similar problem with the preheat light staying on, and the fault was a buggered up glo plug. I thoiuhgt that's fine and I took the van into the local MB workshop and asked they replace all 4 glo plugs (mistake No 1)
After MB had disabled the vehicle so I couldn't take it away, they informed me all of the plugs were seized into the head. Apparently a common fault with this engine. The only fix MB could offer was for them to call a local subbie in called "Captain Thread" who had developed a fix foir getting the stuck glo plugs out without having to remoive the cylinder head etc etc.

I agreed to this and am pleased to confirm Captain Thread got the old glo plugs out. The damage from all of this was over $1000, but I'm sure it would have been 3 or 4 times this if they would have had to take the head off.

After fixing the glo plugs, lo and behold the light was still on on the dash. MD then informed me the realy generally burns out when there is a stuffed glo plug. I bought this and fitted it myself ($230)

My advice is if you have the light on on the dash, put up with it as the engine really doesn't need the glo plugs to start unless you are in the Snowy in Winter.

Good Luck

the black stuff on the rocker cover is common on high mileage vans, time and effort i am afraid. gently chip off the black stuff by hand, should take 1-2 hrs, be careful not to go through the rocker cover it is quite thin. the injectors can be removed with a puller, I have one, not a lot of good to you though! if there is no faults with the injectors engine then leave alone.

glow plug light as explained before.

my 311 cdi also runs like a baby, but have very similiar problems!

Glow plug light was taking a long time too turn off so i thought i better get them replaced as we are off the austrian alps. simple procedure if your glow plugs actually want too play ball. got two out and two are snapped in half where the nut is spinning but the thread is not turning. a common problem on all Cdi engines i believe.

my advice is too get these replaced at every service (40-50 quid).

after removing the trim cover i have also found a build up of tar like substance, number four injector not sat right in cylinder head. maybe a seal problem or injectors need servicing either way they got too be removed which isn't easy and requires some brute force and patience. WD40 and constant movement will finally get them out.

As for the glow plugs, you could pay someone specialised concerned in extraction engineering or just remove the cylinder head and drill them out. iam in the latter process and it takes some time. the timing mechanism has haltered me for today iam not sure the manual makes 100% sense. i must rotate the inlet camshaft to lock them in place after removing the chain tensioner but the exhaust camshaft doesn't seem to budge. the inlet camshaft (left) must be rotated clockwise meaning that the exhaust camshaft goes opposite is this correct???

i hope u dont get too my stage but if so it will defiantly save u at least 800 pounds! good luck to everyone else i know i will need some!!
