R500 or R320 CDI?

I'm sure this has been beaten to death by now, but that should make it easy for everyone to have a well-formed opinion!

I had an M113 S-Class back in the glory days and it was easily the most solid part of that car. I am familiar with the passing power and reliability of that motor and the number of spark plugs required in a tune up. I dig it. I'm not that put off by the fuel mileage because I've spent enough time north of 100mph to consider that a "fast tax".

I live in Canada and I take a fair number of road trips. Would prefer something with full Airmatic for the smoothness, am I wrong?

There seem to be a fair number of high ish mileage R320 CDIs around for cheap, I'm not afraid of high mileage, but I wonder if the diesel will be decent enough to drive for 8-10 hours at a time and if it will be rewarding at the pump enough to merit any extra service I might need to do. Also, what's the deal with tuning, can I make a sports wagon out of this thing?

I can probably find a nice lower mileage 500 for less than an arm and a leg, but will that motor feel as good in this body as it did in my W220?

Thoughts?

Definitely go with the diesel. The R500 is terrible on fuel and towing isn't so great either.

I really enjoy my R350 bluetec.

Just curious. What is the price difference between premium gas and diesel fuel in Canada?

Sorry I didn't see this until now. Premium is about 10-15 cents per litre more. So like 40-50 cents per gallon

Pretty much the reverse of the US. Here, diesel fuel is more expensive, so no real savings.
