Nasty rattle coming from engine bay on starting

2012 R350 4Matic. Same engine and tranny as the ML350 I am told so I am posting here and in the ML section.

I'm getting a nasty rattle coming from the engine compartment when I start the engine. It's either something loose inside the engine bay or something much much worse.

Rattles, then settles down to nothing one the engine is running. Seems to be coming from the left side (driver's side/ port side) of the engine bay.

Any ideas anyone? I'm going to try and get the Memsahib off her derriere and start the engine while I look and listen, but failing that or some good advice here, I guess I'm going to have to wait for something to happen....

I too get some kind of crazy sound upon starting the car but it goes away almost immediately once the engine gets going. And it only happens when thecv at has been sitting few a couple of days. No way to know if our problems are th e same without hearing the sounds though.

Asked on the ML page (the R has the same engine and tranny as the ML) and the collective wisdom seems to be the timing chain tensioner sticking when cold. Apparently there was a recall to fit a check valve in the pressurized oil line that operates the tensioner on the MLs, so I presume it also applies to the Rs. Going to check if that's the case and if so whether mine ever had the recall acted upon.

Pls keep us posted if you hear anything regarding this. Wonder if this is just an annoyance or if it has the potential to cause engine problems down the line?

I've had two '12 R's and they both do it. Doesn't sound like a lifter clatter but something loose inside the motor. Very weird sound. Tech told me they all do that... Not very comforting.

From what I found talking to techs, there is a startup rattle that's unique to the m276 gas motor. That motor is only on the 2012 R

Mine started doing it at about 140k miles.

Oil change due soon so I'm going to try an engine flush to see if that unclogs anything...

What is your engine flush procedure?
