Thumbs up Power Trunk Would Not Open Fully

Hi all. My 2002 S500 power trunk would not open fully. Sometimes if opens halfway and now it opens like three quarter of the way. My old mechanic told me it is just the two shocks that is attached to the power trunk. Is he right? If so, where could I get those shocks in a fairly reasonable price? Is there a good online parts store you would recommend? Thank you very much in advance.

MaxPow is a decent brand for trunk struts.
https://www.amazon.com/Maxpow-Compat.../dp/B01J1NP5IS
Or you can buy genuine MB ones from FCPEuro.com that have a lifetime warranty.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/Mercedes~Ben...keywords=trunk

Also, be sure to check your settings within the dash console to see if the trunk lid is set to restricted (only opens half way).

Hi,

If we are talking PTL, (Power Trunk Lifter) here, that is the one with the red illuminated button on the lower edge of trunk lid, visible when trunk open, then ......................

Your mechanic is talking pure bull ............

Struts have no effect on PTL.

I'd start by checking the setting like @4DGeorge said, and after that I'd be using SDS to check out the hall sensors that control it's opening limits .................

PTL is found in PSE because PSE is what controls it

4DGeorge, where do you check the setting on the dash console? Can you attach a picture of the place where you can change the settings? Thank you in advance.

Hi,

My Car doesn't have PTL, and sadly nor does the Parts donor Car , I was hoping it would so I could retrofit my Car

Been a while since I played with one, but I'm "educated guessing" it should be in Dash Cluster either Vehicle Menu or Convenience Menu ..................

If it is not there and the Car has PTL then there is likely a problem, such as Cluster has been replaced or worked upon and the "Version Codings" in Cluster are incorrect.

SDS would confirm all this

Sad to report back, it is in the "Off" position but the trunk still opens 3/4 way.

Once again, Dave2302 is correct, the instrument cluster was indeed replaced by the dealer under warranty (I do have the dealer maintenance record, as well as the Carfax report)

BTW, just as the windows\sunroof can be reprogrammed after having the battery disconnected, the trunk also has a similar reset procedure using the switch on the driver's door panel. Instead of listening for the click sound, continue to hold the switch for an additional 15 seconds. Do this with the trunk in the fully opened position, and then again from the closed position. Sometimes I've had to go through two full open\close cycles to get the trunk or particular window to be reset correctly.

Have you tried changing the dash setting to ON, cycling the trunk lid, and then turn the setting back to OFF?

In case you've not seen it, here's a page with more than you ever wanted to know about the trunk, including how to open it by force if ever necessary:

If you have option code
https://w220.ee/Option_codes#881_-_REMOTE_TRUNK_LOCKING
then you will have in DAS under PSE module
https://w220.ee/Pneumatic_System_Equ...AS_adaptations
adaptation for normalizing remote opening (it will ask you to raise trunk lid to the highest position by hand).
