Oil filter won't fit? 2003 S430 4matic

I have a 2003 S430 4matic and after changing the oil, I couldn't seem to get my new filter to fit. I've tried a FRAM CH8481 and MANN HU718/5x, both of which are supposed to fit my vehicle. The MANN filter has black marks which indicate how far the filter is supposed to slide into the filter housing, and the closest I could get it was about 1/4 - 1/2" away. There's far too much resistance if I try to reinstall the housing with one of these two filters. This is the first time I've tried to change the filter since buying the car from an individual, and the filter he had in it is noticeably smaller than either of the two that are supposed to fit. It also looks like it may have been crushed down when installing originally, because the fins of the filter are in a bit of a spiral pattern rather than vertical.

I can get some pictures if needed, but I'd like to see if anyone has an idea before I go make an oily mess.

Thanks in advance!

the oil filters for later engines ( 2012) and up will not fit the earlier engines.
Buy from MB for your car - the price difference is minor!

Hi,

I suggest those who insist on "cheaping out" on Oil Filters have a watch of this short Video ....................

I have installed Mann HU718/5X fleece filters ,on M112 and M113 engines many times. They are excellent filters.
I like to place the cap /frame inverted on the bench , then slide and twist and push the filter down and on. Put a smear of oil around the inside edges first. Smear clean oil on the o rings before installing into the car , and be sure to place the large o ring in the 2nd groove down , NOT right next to the flange.
There should be one black line visible when it is in the correct position ,,and the filter should protrude from the cap by 68mm.
Good luck

Dont mes about with aftermarket filters .Mercedes is the only place for vital parts like this .One wrong step and yopur talking 1000$ for a new engine or auto box .All this through fitting a not up to specs filter . Vin number your filter and get it right, so you dont have any nasty problems later on .

Mann is an OEM supplier, and it should fit. If there’s a problem, you can always get a new plastic housing.

This DIY shows the topic around minute 5.

Yeah, Mann is an OE for M-B. Mahle and Xengst apparently are also OE's. I run all three in my own cars, and they fit perfectly. All made in Germany or Austria, too.

Remember to twist and push the filter all the way into the oil filter housing. It takes a little bit of oomph, and this is true when you buy that Mann filter from Mercedes-Benz as well.

By the way, are you using the fleece filter or the paper filter?

EDIT: Duh...the 718/5x *is* the fleece filter and the correct one for the M112/M113 engines. You should be fine.

I recently bought a X164 GL450 from a small car dealer who said all vehicles were "all serviced up". The car had a little sticker at the top of the windshield indicating 2500 miles left before the next oil change... but it indicated the license plate that was a vanity plate belonging to the previous owner. So, I decided to change the oil. My surprise when I took out the oil filter and it said on it, Made In Korea. The oil was black and nasty, too. On to all the air filters, which were very dirty, probably had been in there for 15,000 miles, maybe more! So I replaced all the air filters in the car, and did spark plugs as well, which were the original ones that came with the car. This dealer had left on their advertising license plate frames, which I took off and tossed in the garbage. The guy also claimed he had put "new" tires on the car because the old tires were cracking rubber. A close look at the tires showed that's been on the car about three years. Never believe a word any car dealer tells you! And Yes I use MANN Fleece filters. Made in Germany!!

Hi,

A Car Dealers idea of a "Full Service" is and always has been at very best an Oil change without new Filter using supermarket oil

Don't believe a word that comes out of their mouths !!
