From W220 S55 to W221 S65

I have pulled the trigger on the purchase of a 2007 S65 and I'm planning to let go of my 2006 S55

I'm keeping my 2007 SL55 (P30) as I maintain several other MB's for others (Sl65, S63 and SL55) the time available to work on my own cars is limited so keeping my own stable down to 2 cars is what I need to do.

Having worked on my friends 2008 SL65 kind of got me interested in getting a V12, since I really enjoy my SL55 (P30) I considered replacing the S55 sedan and when I found a 2007 S65 with the right color combination and good maintenance records I made the call.

The fact that I have an engineering background, the garage, tools and many years of hands on DIY experience (Porsche, BMW and MB) makes it easier for me to make the switch compared to others that have to outsource the work on their cars.

Thanks to all that have posted on this forum about their car experiences it has been very helpful to direct myself.

Happy motoring

More power than an S65 AMG? Why not just install warp nacelles on the doggone thing?

And yes, that car is lovely. It's actually almost the same color scheme as Dad's car (Dad's interior is a slightly lighter version of tan).

Hi Herman

I didn't realise you were considering replacing your W220 with a W221. I found the switch very illuminating, and despite the similarities under the skin, I found the W221 to be a rather different car, moving back to W140 values. Much more the luxo-barge, and the back seat is leagues better.

Under the hood is different too, and there seem to be many lessons learned from the 220. Lots of things are much easier to work on, and you'll probably need to.

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

Regards, Nick

I was looking and was very tempted to get the 2006 White/beige S65 with Renntech 4 sale in CA but than got to look all the extras that come on the 2007 which was close to the same asking price. After I got to review it's life's history, always been a CA/TX car (no snow/ice) always dealer maintained (which is no guarantee) but an indicator that people care for their vehicle.

As by now I have battled many challenges thrown at me by these cars and I have come out ahead in dealing with them.

I feel that between my 2007 SL55 and now the 2007 S65 I'm driving the best that MB offered for this time period without me putting in 100K plus figures

Meeting here with guys like your self and sharing our accomplishments makes it even better!

I appreciate all the kind words by all that have replied to this thread, best wishes to all and I'll be around

Best H

The w221 is just so much updated on tech and luxury features. Panoramic roof , dual screens , night vision , etc. even though I still love the w215 and w220 (I still have 5 w215 coupes) the w221 and w216 are just phenomenal
