2001 S320 cdi Limp mode help

Damn thing.

The car is in permanent limp mode apart from a few mornings where it springs into life and smokes like hell for a mile or so, then back to limp mode.

What I have done so far....

New MAF sensor

New EGR valve and inlet manifold

New turbo pressure switch (one near EGR valve)

Checked turbo hoses etc, non seem split.

When it does go, it really flies but some black smoke. No smoke in limp mode.

Its spoiling the car for me now.

Thanks

Hi @NigeMBW220 ,

I have a 2005 E320 CDI that was doing the same thing (similar motor as your S320 CDI). In my case, it turned out to be, of all things, the air filter. I opened up the air filter housing, and it looked like there was a bird's nest or something similar in there. Took that out, thoroughly cleaned out the housing, put a new air filter in there, and like magic, the engine has been great since. No more smoke, no more limp mode, none of that. It's been almost two years now (I happened to drive it today to work--it's been about 3 days since it's been driven).

You are very likely getting engine codes. Do you have access to a STAR Diagnostic System or a friend who has one? If you're doing your own work on your car, and I think one should when possible, an SDS setup really is so valuable for diagnosing things like this.

Solved!!

Reset everything by disconnecting battery and leaving for 30 seconds.

The new inlet manifold and EGR seem to have it sorted.

No smoke under decent acceleration, but still some on hard.

Feels great again !
