I did this to the project 2000 S500 a bit over a month ago. I found it easier to just remove the entire air intake.

1.) There's what looks like a quite large, circular clip at the top. Use a screwdriver to gently pry its lever open and remove that clip.

2.) Remove the electrical connector for the MAF. It's a clip-on like other M-B connectors; mine came off with minor persuasion.

3.) There's one clip in the back of the air intake that I could see. I undid that and then just kinda gradually twisted the MAF out. There is what looks like a second clip below that, but as I recall, it's more like a plastic spacer "stud" more than anything else. Anyway, it does come out with some gentle-ish persuasion.

You should now have the room to manoeuver the EGR pipe so that it'll come out.

code resolved by itself?

The code went away today before I could fix anything. Does that mean the EGR works, that is, EGR is all or nothing? If the EGR works then does that point to more towards a vacuum hose or EGR pipe narrowing?

No, the issue is still there, just not triggering the CEL.

When the issue starts out, I find some good highway driving tends to make the CEL ago away for a while. It will come back.

If you haven't already, you could check the rubber hose between the engine and the EGR valve. At this age, those hoses start cracking and leaking vacuum. Cheap easy fix if it needs replacing too.

This is what I purchased a few months ago:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000I45Y8Q

I don't recall which sizes was needed for the EGR valve. That set is all I have and has had all I needed for the repairs I've done so far. If you plan on working on your W220 - it is probably a good idea to get the set anyways.

Yep, that looks like a good set.

Here's the set that I bought. This one's made by Lisle; Sears happened to have it on sale back when we still had a Sears store.

Got MAF out of the way. The main tube was fairly clean. One of 2 vacuum lines was old( I did not see a hole but it crumbled taking it off) so replaced both. I drove 60 miles but error code still on. In order to take EGR out(since check engine light still on) I need to access E or star socket underneath the round metal pipe that is running from 6 to 3 o clock. How do I access it? Is there a trick? The round pipe would seem to be hard to get off. To get the yellow clip off do I squeeze the wires or pull them apart?
Are Pierburg EGR valves ok?
Thanks

To remove the yellow connector, pull the wire loop up.
